To provide economic guidance and coordination in implementation of Ministry of Industry and Trade sectoral programs and projects


A dynamic and comprehensive policy and planning system


To ensure effective and efficient implementation of programs and activities aimed at increased contributing to economic growth and sustainable development.


Strategic Objective

To coordinate, monitor, evaluate and provide technical support in the formulation of sectoral policies, plans, programs and projects.

The department is responsible for policy formulation, economic planning, budget preparation, monitoring, and evaluation, statistics and information management.


Director of Policy and Planning is responsible for overseeing the four divisions which fall under the department. The divisions are:


Policy and Planning Division

 The division is responsible for:

·     Initiating and coordinating policy formulation, analysis and reviews in the Ministry,

·     Programme and project development and implementation, which involves:

-          Programme development, coordination and review,

-         Strategy development and review

-         Development of project proposals for Funding,

·        Budget and work plan preparation and development.


Monitoring and Evaluation Division

This Division is responsible for:

·        Monitoring implementation of the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS) activities.

·        Monitoring projects being implemented by this Ministry.

·        Preparation of the Industry and Trade Chapter of Mid-year and Annual Economic Reports


Statistics Division

It is responsible for collection of data and management of databases for Industry and Trade Sector; and also producing statistical bulletins for the Ministry.


Information Technology (IT)

The Information and Communication Technology Division is responsible for m managing management information systems (MIS), which involves internet, website and other ICT support services for the Ministry.
